Prehistoric archaeology in Germany: Its history and current situation

1992
A historiographical account of the development and establishment of prehistoric studies in Germany is presented. The time‐span from the Renaissance to the post‐Second World War period is dealt with. Links to classical archaeology are also accounted for. The political history of Germany with its changing national boundaries and the split into two separate states after the Second World War has been decisive for the development.
