PRECRASH Sensing as information platform

2004
This paper provides a basic description of the functions of the PRECRASH-Sensing system from manufacturer Robert Bosch GmbH. The system is a multifunctional platform carrying various functions. PRESET allows precise control of pyrotechnical restraints such as airbags in frontal crashes, using closing velocity and activating a few milliseconds before impact. PREFIRE employs information provided by the surround sensing system to activate reversible restraints such as belt tensioners, using closing velocity, time to impact and offset information. Pedestrian protection can be provided by an active hood in low-velocity situations. Emergency braking can be implemented but must be accurate as it must not be triggered in a no-crash situation. In the control unit, sensor data is received and processed, removing false alarms, and decisions are taken on which functions should be activated. For the covering abstract see ITRD E127621.
