Blood transfusion and the social contract
2012
Aims To present a rational approach to delivering a safe and effective blood supply.
Methods Literature searching, reflective learning, peer group discussion.
Results To provide a consistent blood supply system, there is much to learn from the rigour of philosophy. The organic development of blood safety practices has led to some inconsistencies. It is essential to consider all of those involved in the process, including donors and recipients but particularly those who may be damaged by, for example, a transfusion-transmitted infection.
Conclusion Current practices, at least in some countries, have evolved and use a mixture of philosophical approaches. A new way is recommended.
