Terminology concerning the concepts of hydrocarbon reserves

1982
A unified terminology is necessary when hydrocarbon reserves and recovery are to be discussed. This work presents definitions of the following terms: reservoir, hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir, hydrocarbon deposit, and hydrocarbon field; quantitative concepts such as the geologic hydrocarbon volume and hydrocarbon-in-place; and the distinction between resources and reserves. The ultimate resources are divided into production plus proven reserves, probable reserves, possible reserves, potential hypothetical resources, and potential speculative resources; the sum of these makes up the ultimate resources. In addition, there are the hydrocarbons considered nonrecoverable. The recovery methods are divided into primary recovery, assisted or secondary recovery, and improved or tertiary recovery. 18 references.
