Trying to rewrite the rulebook on truck tyre technology

2005
This article reports a new development in truck tyre tread design. Manufacturer Michelin has introduced changes to tread compound and pattern. These are now directional with new "raindrop" and "double-wave" sipes. The tyre also features five steel belts using single continuous steel cord. Benefits include better tread support and increased load capacity. The "raindrop" sipes are cylindrical channels designed to open up as the tread wears, creating new sipes. The "double wave" sipes are deep zig-zag slots running down into the cylindrical channels. The new tyres have proved to have increased grip in wet conditions and a longer life expectancy. The price is not expected to increase greatly.
