Thermal defocusing of brief laser pulses

1969
Abstract A theoretical expression is derived for the expansion of a focused Gaussian laser beam due to thermal changes in the refractive index of air. The expression is valid only for pulse lengths for which thermal diffusion can be ignored at the beam waist. The area of the focused spot is shown to increase linearly with pulse energy.
