Successful Double-Lung Transplantation for Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma

1997
Cancer is generally considered to be a contraindication for pulmonary transplantation. Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma is a rare form of pulmonary cancer; the prognosis of its diffuse form is poor and is characterized by local extension. Herein is reported a successful double-lung transplantation in a woman with a bilateral bronchioloalveolar carcinoma; she was followed up for 5.5 years and showed no evidence of cancer relapse. This suggests that pulmonary transplantation can be performed in selected cases of diffuse bronchioloalveolar carcinoma.
