Surgery for Laryngeal Malignancy

2020
Surgery plays an important role in the management of laryngeal malignant tumors. The distinctive anatomic features of this region and the characteristics of the tumors those occur makes their surgical management challenging. Also important are the pattern of extension and metastasis which make their management so complicated. The surgical principle followed is to provide a radical degree of tumor clearance while preserving maximum laryngeal function. Surgeons can avoid radical surgery due to expanded options and technical refinement to preserve some laryngeal functions. Important organ preserving laryngeal procedures are partial laryngectomy, supraglottic horizontal vertical partial laryngectomy, and supracricoid laryngectomy. The radical procedures are total laryngectomy with partial pharyngectomy and total laryngopharyngectomy.
