Burns and Radiation Exposure

Athletes are often exposed to ultraviolet radiation that comes from the sun during outdoor sports. Acute and chronic ultraviolet radiation has been known to cause ophthalmic disease. The most identified diseases that strongly related to ultraviolet radiation exposure are eyelid malignancies, pterygium, photokeratitis, and cataract. Athletes are advised to wear suitable clothing, hats, and ultraviolet blocking spectacles to prevent exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
