Fractal Analysis of Porous Structures Using a Fuzzy Logic System

In this work, the new greyscale image processing technique based on the fuzzy inference system is proposed for defining the optimal threshold of the binarization. The developed approach involves fuzzy two-class clustering with the help of c-means algorithm and adjustment of the obtained threshold in accordance with the integral brightness of the initial image by the fuzzy if–then rules. On the basis analysis of the binary images by means of the box-counting method, the fractal dimension of porous structures has been calculated and their porosity has been estimated. It is shown that fractal analysis can be a simple and reliable method for defining the porosity.
