Measurement of Scintillation Amplification in a Xenon Detector with a CsI-Luminescence Plate

2001
We describe the work of the UCLA-Torino team at CERN, which uses a two-phase xenon (Xe) detector with a CsI internal photo cathode. We describe a powerful method for amplifying photons in the WIMP detector. With this setup, one photoelectron produces more than 180 luminescent photons, but taking CsI quantum efficiency into account, the overall amplification factor of at least 10 was achieved using the CsI internal photo cathode. This method will provide enough photons in the chamber for maximum detection efficiency. It will also maximize the powerful background discrimination of the detector to search for supersymetric (SUSY) dark matter.
