Achieving ‘baby friendly’ standards in pre-registration education
2011
The Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery at King's College, London is delighted to have achieved re-accreditation for both of its pre-registration midwifery education courses (BSc 18 months; BSc 3 year). It originally gained accreditation in June 2007. Since then there has been a lot of interest in gaining the award and universities all over the UK are seeking to follow suit. This article will explain what the ‘Baby Friendly’ Initiative (BFI) Educational Standards are; how they fit with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) essential skills clusters; detail how we placed these standards into our curriculum; the assessment process and what it has meant for our newly-qualified midwives.
