The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between stress level, stress coping style and mental toughness. An online survey was conducted on 438 university students on Jeju Island. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted using SPSS 24.0. The main research results are as follows. First, the general characteristics and stress level of university students brought a difference in the stress coping style and mental toughness of university students, which were different for each subfactor. Second, the general characteristics and stress level of university students had more independent variables that had an influence on mental toughness than the stress coping style. Third, as a result of analyzing the correlation between the stress coping style and the mental toughness of university students, we found a positive correlation between mental toughness and the stress coping style. In particular, the active coping style showed a higher correlation than the passive coping style, but the difference was not significant. The results of this study suggest an understanding of the level of stress and the reactive and psychological characteristics of university students. The data can be used for education and research to manage stress and to improve the mental toughness of university students.
