The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in colon carcinoma and its relationship with prognosis

2011
Objective:To examine the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in colon carcinoma and its relationship with prognosis of colon carcinoma. Methods:The expression of VEGF in 120 cases of colon carcinoma with followed-up data from 1995 to 2005 was analyzed by immunohistochemistry(S-P).The relationship between expression of VEGF and elinieal characteristics of the patients with colon carcinoma was analyzed with chi-square test. The survival rates between different tissues VEGF expressions in colon carcinoma were compared. Results:The positive expression of VEGF in colon carcinoma was observed mainly in cytoplasm of tumor cells. And the expression of VEGF in colon carcinoma tissue positively correlated with the Dukes stage, recurrence and distant metastasis(P0.05).The 5-year overall survival rates of patients with positive and negative expression of VEGF were 46.4% and 76.5% respectively. The survival rates of different groups were significantly different by log rank test(P0.01).Conclusion:The expression of VEGF in colon carcinoma tissue positively correlates with the Dukes stage, recurrence and distant metastasis.High expression of VEGF in patients with colon carcinoma predicts poor prognosis.
