The working conditions and workload of nursery school teachers are a subject of constant debate in the media alongside their ensuing consequences. This paper presents the work requirements and burdens of nursery school teachers, the resources available to them as well as the strains they face in the form of stress, excessive demands and health problems. Other objects of investigation are the desire for early retirement and job satisfaction. The BIBB/BAuA Employment Survey 2012, which is representative of employed persons in Germany, forms the database for the study. Employees from other occupations are used as a comparison group.
