Passive nano-strain sensor for very remote interrogation

A pi(π)-shifted grating has been used as a passive strain sensor to achieve a resolution of 50 nanostrain (ne). The Pound-Drever-Hall frequency locking technique was used to obtain a stable signal at a distance of 50 km, paving the way for remote detection of sound, temperature and pressure at a long distance from sources of electricity.
