Sulphur Solubility in Slags and Slag-Metal Sulphur Partition

1981
AbstractThe experimental data on sulphide capacities in slags are reviewed and the methods of obtaining data are considered briefly. The slags are considered with respect to the oxygen potentials involved. Thus those containing iron oxides are considered separately. The systems involved cover a wide range of compositions from the binary CaO-SiO2, CaO-Al2O3 to quaternary and quinary slags. The limited amount of data on calcium sulphide solubility are reviewed, various discrepancies in these data are so far unresolved. The data obtained by indirect methods are compared with slag-metal experiments and it is shown that oxygen potential is critical when considering these data. The application of thermodynamic measurement to sulphur partition in iron and steelmaking is considered and comparisons with process data are made where possible.
