A new implemented pole slipping protection algorithm using the equal area criterion

2004
With the increase of the embedded generation, loss of synchronism detection by protective relays is an acute problem. Bad operation will increase network instability. Classical techniques are based on apparent impedance measurements. Very carefully settings and studies are necessary to provide good operation. This contribution presents a new algorithm, commercially available, based on the application of the equal area criterion to detect losses of transient stability. Great advantages are a comprehensive theory, an extremely easy setting and an excellent discrimination on unrecoverable synchronism losses. The algorithm is analysed and some of the choices to provide protection from small industrial generators to large ones are given.
