Phonetic Aspects in Translation Studies

Translation Studies cover a subfield of Applied Linguistics and are concerned with the scientific study of translation and interpreting in its various media and forms: oral vs. written, simultaneous vs. consecutive, literary vs. technical, human vs. machine, direct vs. relais, remote vs. in situ, etc. While linguistics in general have a long tradition of both theoretical and experimental research into various aspects of translation and interpreting, the phonetics and phonology of this specialized form of intercultural communication have, until very recently, attracted only little attention within the scientific community. The purpose of this paper is to summarize some recent findings of this research and to indicate potential directions for further studies into the phonetics and phonology of translation.
