Large Femoral Heads Can Help Reduce Risk of Dislocation in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Methods: One thousand one hundred eighty-one consecutive THAs were performed between July 2000 and April 2006 by 16 surgeons. Preoperative diagnosis was OA in 87% of hips. Mean age was 62 years (range, 18-91); weight was 188 lb (range, 89-350 lb), and height was 67 in (range, 49-81 in). There were 620 women and 561 men. Head sizes used were 28 mm (30%), 32 mm (26%), and 36 mm (44%). Surgical approaches included 2 anterior, 107 anterolateral, 113 posterior, and 917 posterolateral, and the remaining were classified as “others.”
