The electrokinetic potential and the aggregation stability of alundum in sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions

1998
Electrosurface properties and the stability of hydrophilic dispersions of alundum in solutions of KCI and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) are investigated by microelectrophoresis and the flow ultramicroscopy techniques. It is found that aged aqueous dispersions of alundum are highly stable to indifferent electrolytes. Addition of SDS accompanied by the neutralization of the particle charge due to SDS adsorption have no noticeable effect on the stability of dispersions. The results obtained are explained by the presence of developed boundary layers of water near the surface of alundum particles.
