Effects of Chemical State and of Mechanical Deformation on the Wave-length of X-ray Emission Lines

1965
THE effects of the chemical state of a specimen on the wave-length of the characteristic X-ray lines emitted have regained interest recently, as can be judged by the numerous papers presented on this topic at the 1964 Denver Conference on Applications of X-Ray Analysis. The subject of the influence of chemical bonding on X-ray spectra is not new; it has been dealt with, for example, by Baun and Fischer1 and has been summarized by Faessler2 and Herglotz3. This communication presents some further and rather striking evidence for this ‘chemical shift’.
