Smart control for Smart Grids: From lighting systems to Grid side management

Smart Grids are a hot topic with hundreds of applications and different approaches. In the present paper, the proposed system integrates street lighting, renewable energy sources, energy storage devices and inverter connected to the mains. With this in mind, the Smart Grid can be considered not only as an energy consumer/generator but also as a grid supporter, being capable of reducing the energy consumption of the lighting system or injecting energy back to the mains if needed. A communication protocol for the whole system is proposed.
