Interleucina-18 en síndrome metabólico

2015
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is an entity that occurs with a frequency of 41.6% in Mexico, it is associated with a state of chronic inflammation in wich multiple cytokines are involved. This review article describes the current scientific evidence that suggests that interleukin-18 (IL-18) could be closely related to the MS and its consequences. There has been observed an increase in serum levels of IL-18 MS and detected expression of IL-18 in the unstable atherosclerotic plaque in adipose tissue and muscle tissue. This article also discusses the pathogenic aspects in which IL-18 could play a role in the development of MS.
