Is science rational?: An analysis of the nature of scientific knowledge

Imre Lakatos, the Hungarian philosopher of mathematics and science, held two major theses in relation to science. The first thesis was proposed in answer to the question: 'What is science and what are its methods?' Lakatos' answer to this problem was that science is a body of knowledge arrived at by a methodology of competing research programmes.
