Research on the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage to Improve the Stability of Microgrids under Extreme Conditions

2020
This paper presents application of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) for improving the bus frequency and voltage stability in microgrids under extreme conditions. For the extreme conditions of successive disconnection of the microgrid system and the distributed energy resources, the effects of the SMES are investigated. A microgrid consists of wind turbine, photovoltaic generation system and micro-turbine is modelled in PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the feasibility of the proposed scheme. The performance evaluation and comparisons are also conducted based on the simulation results with and without SMES scheme, respectively. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of SMES in improving transient stability of microgrids under extreme conditions.
