Tarnish protection of silver jewels by plasmapolymer coatings

2003
The major problem of silver and silver coatings is the tendency to get a tarnish layer with sulphuric compounds out of the air on the surface. The previous methods to protect the silver has several disadvantages. The plasmapolymer coating system developed by the Fraunhofer Institute (IFAM) in Bremen works without these disadvantages. This system was checked under production conditions for silver jewellery. The results compared with the previous state of the art were excellent. Therefore, the plasmapolymer coating is a suitable tarnish protection process for silver jewels.
