Evaluation of the styloid process in subjects with Class III malocclusion

2008
Purpose: This study evaluated the calcification of the stylohyoid and stylomandibular ligaments in subjects with Class III malocclusion. Methods: Outline tracings in acetate paper were obtained over 45 panoramic radiographs, from the lower margin of the tympanic plate of the temporal bone to the tip of the styloid process. All measurements were performed by a single operator, with digital calipers, in a dimmed-light room. Styloid process length above 30 mm was considered as elongated styloid process. Data were analyzed by Student-t test. Results: The mean styloid process length was 38.18 mm at the right side and 35.5mm at the left side, with no significant difference between sides. These values were statistically different (P Key words: Styloid process; Eagle Syndrome; class III malocclusion
