Tree sub-ring structure analyses by x-ray microprobe analysis

1995
An X-ray capillary microprobe was applied to the investigation of Pinus silvestris wood from Polish forests. The micrometre range of the microprobe gave an insight into the wood sub-ring structure. The use of transmitted and scattered radiation permitted the detailed tracing of the subtle changes in the density of the wood. The changes in density were connected with the changes in temperature during the growth period. It was established that some kinds of biological activity in the case of Polish conifers covered the whole year, including winter. Samples of wood from the northern Swedish Picea Abies showed totally different mechanisms of winter behaviour.
