Polarization effects in SnO2 thick-film sintered sensors

Conductance measurements in thick-film sintered SnO2 samples with Au electrodes show that, besides temperature and the composition of the surrounding atmosphere, the applied dc voltage also influences the conductance, both in steady-state and in transient conditions. This is interpreted in terms of the accumulation of a negative space charge (electrons trapped on levels distributed over an energy range in the forbidden gap) at the cathode interface. En mesurant la conductance electrique des echantillons de SnO2 en couches epaisses, pourvues d'electrodes en Au, nous avons observe que, hormis la temperature et la composition de l'atmosphere ambiante, le voltage dc applique influence aussi la conductance, en regime stationnaire comme en regime transient. Nous attribuons cette influence a l'accumulation d'une charge spatiale negative (des electrons trappes sur des niveaux repartis sur un interval energetique dans la zone interdite) dans la region de l'interface au cathode.
