Inbreeding and arrhenotoky in the ambrosia beetle Xyleborus compactus (Eichh.) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae)

SYNOPSIS
An account is given of the composition of populations in galleries formed by Xyleborus compactus in stems of coffee and cocoa in Western Nigeria. The incidence of arrhenotokous parthenogenesis and of a high degree of inbreeding is described and the possible significance of inbreeding in regard to variation in morphology and behaviour is discussed.
