Cold testing of a high power gyroklystron-accelerator interface

2005
At the University of Maryland, we have been evaluating the use of gyroklystrons to drive RF accelerators (Latham et al., 2004). In order to use our 500 kV, 500 A system to energize a 17.136 GHz accelerator structure built by the Haimson Research Corporation (HRC) (Haimson and Mecklenburg, 1998), we need to construct an interface that converts the gyroklystron TE/sub 02/ output mode into two standard rectangular WR42 waveguide modes. This structure needs to support up to 80 MW of pulsed power (1 /spl mu/s pulses) in a high-vacuum (/spl sim/10/sup -8/ T) environment. The design and cold test results for this system will be presented.
