The Schauta operation: Its place in the treatment of malignancy of the cervix and vagina

1988
SummaryThe Schauta radical vaginal hysterectomy has been used for the treatment of eight patients with malignant disease of the cervix or vagina. Seven of the patients had uterine prolapse. Five had primary carcinoma of the cervix. One had a leiomyosarcoma of the cervix and one had a malignant melanoma of the vagina. The eighth patient had a vaginal secondary from previously treated cervical carcinoma. There were no significant postoperative complications or urinary tract problems. One patient has subsequently died of disseminated disease. The remaining seven patients remained free of recurrence at follow up, though one died of a gastric adenocarcinoma. The indications for and results of the Schauta operation are discussed.
