Organic and Fair Trade Cotton in Mali: A Factor in Social Change for Women?

The production of organic and fair trade cotton started in Mali in 2004 in a context of crisis in conventional cotton production. This alternative met with strong interest among producers, especially women. The status of producer gives women new opportunities and contributes to social change. However, without a reduction in gender inequalities in terms of access to land, farming equipment, or the workforce, the sector could face imbalances that might compromise its durability.
