URINARY EXCRETION OF IODINE IN NORWAY

1993
Before World War II, there existed in Norway areas of endemic goiter. One of the areas, Modum, was thoroughly investigated in 1934 (1). All school children in the community were examined, and urinary iodine excretion was determined in 26 adults by means of a cumbersome chemical method: ashing of urine made strongly alkaline, extraction with chloroform, followed by colorimetry against known standards.
