The knowledge of medical about aging and its related factors in Yazd, Iran

Objective: With the increasing population of the elderly around the world, medical students must have sufficient knowledge to provide health services to them. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the knowledge of medicine, health and nursing students about the facts of aging and related factors.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2020 in Yazd. Students of Yazd University of Medical Sciences formed the research community. The required sample size was 105 students from medicine, health and nursing students. Data were collected with two tools a) Demographics characteristics checklist. The Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQI). FAQI consists of 25 items in four dimensions that are answered by three options "correct", "do not know" and "false". A higher score indicates a better situation and a higher level of knowledge about the facts of aging.Results: The mean age of students was 29 years. About 75% of the participants were women. Less than 20% of the participants attended conferences and seminars related to the health of the elderly. The majority of students in all three disciplines (medicine, health and nursing students) had no experience of volunteering with the elderly. The mean scores of knowledge about the facts of aging in medical, nursing, and health students were 11.09, 8.8, and 11.8, out of 25 respectively. Conclusion: Students participating in the present study did not have sufficient knowledge about the facts of aging. It is necessary to increase students' knowledge in this regard by implementing appropriate educational programs.
