Since the ancient time, there had been numerous and various folk legends in China, among which are the important ones of mountains, rivers and other geographical features. This article centers on the legend of Dunhuang Ershiquan, which circulated about in Dunhuang, an important historic town along the Silk Road during the Tang and the Five Dynasties, giving consideration also to other water seeking legends of the same category, mapping their evolutionary routes and modem propagation, exploring the historic significance, the local significance, the truthfulness and the fictitiousness of the legends. The article also analyzes the creative significance of Ode to Ershiquan, a literary work based on the legend of Ershiquan, and its literary value.
