ABSTRACT Sofa. 2016. Developing a Model of an Online Reading Summative Test for College Students of Reading Comprehension. Thesis, Graduate Program in English Language Teaching, Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors: (I) Prof. Dr. Gunadi Harry Sulistyo, M.A., (II) Fachrurrazy, M.A., Ph.D. Keywords: online summative test, reading comprehension As the needs assessment conducted in STKIP PGRI Jombang, crucial need of the availability of a test that can replace the previous reading test which is conventional, impractical and time consuming emerged. In this era of technology, test was held orally, manually, do not cover all indicators in the syllabus and it only covered one genre of text. To fulfill the need of the test that can overcome the problem, a model of an online reading summative test was made. This online test could be a sample of a valid, reliable, practical, cost effective and innovative test particularly for Reading Comprehension 2 course and also other courses. The design of the study was Educational Research and Development (R&D) as it develops and validates an assessment instrument model. The stages of the test development model were conducting needs assessment, creating content specification/blueprint, blueprint expert review, prototype writing, prototype review, test installing, test and ICT expert review, try-out, item analysis, and final form/publishing the final form. There were 100 subjects involved in the try-out stage. To gain the data, interview with the lecturer in the needs assessment stage was carried out, validation was addressed to six experts (test experts and ICT experts), ITEMAN program version 3.00 was run to do the item analysis, the questionnaire was also utilized to know the students’ response related to the product. The result of the development showed that based on the needs assessment, the availability of a model of an online reading summative test was apparently crucial to overcome the previous conventional, impractical, time consuming and a-not-good test. Based on the item analysis, out of 100 questions created and ran to the try-out stage. The alpha score or the reliability was 0.779 and categorized as good. There were 31 items categorized as valid items. For the ease of scoring and the equalization of the indicators, only 25 items were used. Based on the students’ questionnaire, it was found that more than 80% subjects responded positively toward the online test and they said that the test was good, interesting, effective, practical, and go along with the era. The final product of this research was a set of product includes the blueprint, the test (paper printed form and the screenshot of the online version), the answer key, and the instruction to access the online test. Based on the results, the conclusion was that this product can be a model of reading summative test in STKIP PGRI Jombang since it is practical, time and cost effective. It also had been validated and it was technology based in the era. But it also had weaknesses since there were only 25 items remained, the reading’s level percentage was no longer as it was suggested and it had no construct validity. Further, this research is expected to be an insight to other researchers in developing or knowing the effectiveness of this product toward students’ reading motivation.
