Innervation of the Juxtaglomerular Apparatus and the Effect of Renal Nerve Stimulation

1978
Synthesis, storage and release of renin by the juxtaglomerular apparatus have been investigated by many authors utilizing morphological and biochemical techniques. It is currently assumed that renin release can be triggered by at least three different mechanisms: (1) decrease of blood pressure in the vas afferens, (2) increase of sodium chloride concentration in the macula densa and (3) stimulation of the juxtaglomerular apparatus by the sympathetic nervous system; that is, a peripheral neuro-endocrine interaction.
