Urethral Diverticula and Acquired Megalourethra

2004
Urethral diverticula are less common complications than fistulas and stenoses after hypospadias repair. Diverticula are reported in 4–12% of patients after preputial island flap urethroplasty (Aigen et al. 1987; Castanon et al. 2000; Elder and Duckett 1987), but are extremely rare after meatal-based flap urethroplasty and after tubularised incised plate techniques (0–0.6%) according to De Badiola et al. (1991) and Kass and Chung (2000). In a review of 5 years’ experience and 1,022 hypospadias repairs, Baskin reported diverticula to occur in 7% of the patients treated using the tubularised preputial island flap technique and in no case of onlay island flap procedure (Baskin et al. 1994). Elbakry observed diverticula in 4% of 74 preputial island tube urethroplasty (Elbakry 1999).
