Control of young mediterranean saltwort (Salsola vermiculata) with postemergence herbicides.

1990
Mediterranean saltwort has become an established weed in the upper San Joaquin Valley and the Temblor Range areas of California. Fifteen herbicides were evaluated to detenmine their effects on 6to 8-week-old plants grown in the greenhouse. Mediterranean saltwort was killed by chlorsulfuron3, hexazinone, and metribuzin at low rates. Triclopyr4 (Garlon 3A and Garlon 4), atrazine, imazapyr, glyphosate, dicamba, bromacil, karbutilate, and simazine were effective at higher rates. Four herbicides, asulam, pendimethalin, amitrole, and fosamine, did not kill Mediterranean saltwort at the rates tested. Nomenclature: Amitrole, lH-1,2,4-triazol-3-amine; asulam, methyl [(4-aminophenyl)sulfonyl]carbamate; atrazine, 6-chloro-N-ethyl-N'-(l-methylethyl)-1,3,5-tiazine-2,4-diamine; bromacil, 5-bromo-6-methyl-3-(l-methylpropyl)-2,4(lH,3H)pynimidinedione; chlorsulfuron, 2-chloro-N-[[(4-methoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino]carbonyl]benzenesulfonamide; dicamba, 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid; fosamine, ethyl hydrogen(aminocarbonyl)phosphonate; glyphosate, N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine; hexazinone, 3-cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-l-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-(lH,3H)-dione; imazapyr, (?)-2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxolH-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid; karbutilate, 3-[[(dimethylamino)carbonyl]amino]phenyl(l,l-dimethylethyl)carbamate; metribuzin, 4-amino-6-(l,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)1 ,2,4-triazin-5(4H)-one; pendimethalin, N-( l-ethylpropyl)3,4-dimethyl2,6-dinitrobenzenamine; simazine, 6-chloro-N,N'-diethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine; triclopyr, [(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy]acetic acid; Mediterranean saltwort, Salsola vermiculata L. #5
