Materials properties for engineering critical assessment: Background to the advice given in BS 7910:2013

Abstract The UK procedure for fracture mechanics-based assessment of flaws (BS 7910) was extensively updated in late 2013. This paper outlines how and why the clauses relating to materials properties (in particular those relating to brittle and ductile fracture) have been expanded, and explains the origin and extent of validation of the information. Some worked examples of the treatment of fracture toughness are given, based on results from weld metal tests.
