Shoulder dislocation and the Oxford Chair

We were pleased to see the article by Chung et al 1 in the October 2013 issue of EMJ , supporting the use of the Oxford Chair. The chair was initially designed by Dr Hormbrey as a way to facilitate early shoulder reduction, recognising that rapid reduction reduces patient discomfort. The chair evolved after Dr Hormbrey witnessed colleagues at Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, using a standard chair with a back to reduce shoulder dislocations, with the patient sitting astride the chair, as if on a horse, and using the back of the chair as a fulcrum for the reduction.
