MIGRAINE PREVALENCE AND RELATED FACTORS IN WESTERN ANATOLIA MIGRAINE PREVALANCE

Background: Due to the severity of pain, effect on quality of life, and economic effects to individuals and society, migraine is a significant public health problem. We aimed to determine prevalence, socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors of migraine in western Anatolia. Method: In this cross-sectional, descriptive study, total of 942 volunteer participants in the age of 18-89, living in the center of Canakkale Western Anatolia, were enrolled from the nine primary care centers. We enrolled a questionnaire that asking about their socio-demographic features and the ID-Migraine Screening Test was administered. The participants answering the ID-Migraine test were questioned about characteristics of headache, triggering factors and accompanying complaints along with loss of labor and quality of life during attacks. Results: The mean age of the participants was 44.1±15.00. According to the ID-Migraine Screening test the prevalence of migraine was 15% (n=141) with a rate of 4.7% (n=44) in males and 10.3% (n=97) in females. Based on multivariate analysis the risk of developing migraine is 2.7 times increased by being female (95% CI: 1.75-4.00), and 2.0 times increased by being employed (95 CI: 1.37-3.05). There were 89 women (65.0%) and 40 men (29.2%) who reported migraine attacks affecting daily work. There was no statistically significant relationship between migraine attacks affecting daily life and gender. Conclusion: the prevalence of migraine in western Anatolia was 15%, lower than the average for Turkey. In addition the variables of being female and employed increased the possibility of migraine.
