It is commonly believed that technology-based firms are all the same and public policies designed to support this group do not consider their differences. However, empirical studies show that technology-based companies respond to their environ- ment in a different way and have special needs depending on their origin. The aim of this paper is to identify the differences bet- ween independent technology-based firms (including corporate spin-offs) and university spin-offs (including spin-offs from public research centers).
