Het ontwerpen van een transportcontainer die op locatie kan dienen als operatiekamer
2013
This bachelor assignment researches the possibility of
the development of a transport container which can be
transformed into an operating room during natural disasters.
This assignment will be focused on the development
of the construction rather than the medical part.
This paper starts with an analysis of the point of view
from the company that offered the assignment, Holland
Medical Services.
This resulted in the demand that the container must be
able to be transported through the air and that on location
the container can be transformed into an operation
room with a surface of at least 24 m2. Besides these
operation rooms there will also be tents to complete
the mobile hospital, the entire hospital must be operating
within eight hours after dropping the complex. The
complex must also be transportable over water and land.
The healthcare provided in the mobile hospital should
be equal to the healthcare that is available in the country
where the natural disaster took place. This means that
the operation rooms are obligated to maintain certain
climatic conditions, like temperature, humidity and an
overpressure of minimal 1,05 Pascal.
The analysis made clear that there have to be ISOcorners
in the design of the container to be able to fulfill
the demands of water and air transport. Furthermore,
attention should be paid to aftershock and the protection
against it because the chances on an aftershock are high
in the first 24 hours after the earthquake.
With the information that has been gathered a future
scenario has been written in which the different phases
of use have been described. After some interviews with
Holland Medical Services it became clear that there were
some contradictions in the demands of the company,
these contradictions have been discussed with Holland
Medical Services and choices have been made between
the use of one of multiple materials, costs versus weight
and the choice of design. These choices together with
all the other demands have been merged into a list of
requirements. The requirements have been divided in
functions, criteria and issues. Based on a morphologic
schedule three different concepts have been made. The
seven functions that have been elaborated in the idea
generation are: the volume expansion, the placement of
the legs, the way the legs expand, prevention of leakage,
the isolation of the operation room, leveling the operation
room and the protection against aftershocks.
The three concepts use different solutions to these functions;
the concepts are named Slide, Harmonica and
Railaway. After the idea generation these three concepts
have been developed to give more detailed interpretation
to the functions and they have been evaluated and the
best concept have been chosen to be optimized. Concept
Slide has been chosen, the concept uses a hydraulic
system to expand the legs and during transport the legs
are stored in the chassis of the container.
For increasing the volume the container uses a slidemechanism
en and an automatic controls the leveling
of the operation room. The isolating is done by putting
insulation between the walls of the operation room. To
prevent damage from an aftershock a damper system
will be placed between the operation room and the
chassis, this way the operation room can freely move in
the horizontal plane. A tube will be placed in the walls
to prevent leakages and unwanted airflow through the
seams, the tube will be inflated after the expansion of the
container.
After choosing the concept the detailing could begin,
in this part attention has been paid to the frame, the
water basin, emergency exits, the driving of the slidesystem,
materials, cables and the connection to the tents
complex. After detailing all these points an estimation
of the weight of the transport container has been made.
Concluding it can be said that it is technically possible
to develop a container that can be transformed into
an operation room however due to the weight it is still
uncertain if the limit of 4000 kg is feasible. In order
to get some clarity on this issue a optimizations of the
frame has to been done, furthermore it is important to
get in touch with companies that provide more detailed
information on the materials and the solutions that have
been chosen.
