Design, Construction and Operation of Unmanned Ship Model for Multidisciplinary Engineering Education

2013
ABSTRACT The present investigation represents an attempt to demonstrate the hands-on learning technique. According to the nature of modern technology, engineering students need to understand the multidisciplinary nature of engineering problems. This learning approach is important to provide students with experience in developing technical, management and work-team skills. The investigation concerned the design, construction and operation of unmanned ship model. The steps of the work as well as concluding points are illustrated. KEYWORDS: Multidisciplinary engineering, Unmanned ship model, Education, Experiments 1.INTRODUCTION One of the problems that many engineering graduates face when looking for their first job is: do you have experience? Employers prefer graduates with relevant experience to those without. Why is experience so important to employers? Can students accumulate “workingexperience while studying in college? Thus, it is important to use design projects inside and outside of classrooms to help students gain “workingexperience and skills through hands-on design activities that simulate the actual design activities that occur in the industry. Thus, to help students understand the multidisciplinary nature of product design and the concurrent engineering approach, as well as to provide them with experience in developing technical skills, management skills and collaborative skills, hands-on product design projects are very important for students to gain theses skills [1]. Recently, this topic was investigated by many researchers. These investigations include the maritime engineers as the typical naval architects do no longer find themselves working in the ship-building industry but rather in the industry of ship operators, consultancies, class societies,
