HERCULES'S TONGUE: FORCE AND ELOQUENCE IN SIXTEENTH-CENTURY BRAZIL

EnglishDrawing on the ancient tradition of the body-metaphor for representing the kingdom and its ruling state, the Portuguese word lingua (tongue) emerges in the sixteenth century to designate colonial translators overseas. While many studies were dedicated to the interplay between anatomical and political imagery of the period, few have tackled its imprint on particular lexica and discursive contexts. Based upon a variety of sources related to colonial experiences in Brazil, this essay establishes a nexus between the historical semantics of the word lingua and different models of colonial rule. portugueshttp://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7968.2014v3nespp122Seguindo a antiga tradicao retorica do corpo como metafora para representar o reino e o Estado que governa, a palavra portuguesa lingua estabelece-se no seculo XVI para designar os interpretes do alem-mar, os linguas do reino. Enquanto varios estudos tratam da intersecao entre imaginario politico e anatomico do periodo, poucos se detem em conceitos e contextos discursivos especificos. Com base em uma variedade de materiais oriundos de experiencias coloniais no Brasil, este trabalho estabelece um nexo entre a semântica historica da palavra lingua e diferentes modelos de governo colonial.
