Stell and Maran’s textbook of head and neck surgery and oncology, 5th edn

2013
This is an updated version of a classic book on head and neck surgery. Originally conceived to accompany the British head and neck courses, the book has outlived the course. Aimed at trainees in ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery, it will also be of interest to maxillofacial surgeons and plastic surgeons. It will certainly be useful to consultants in practice as it is up to date and extensive in its coverage of the field. The book used to have just three authors but this fifth edition has two editors and often different authors for each chapter. Nevertheless, the book still feels coherent in style and approach. It has been updated appropriately: it addresses organ preservation therapies and the importance of the human papillomavirus in oropharyngeal cancer. There is also a very useful ebook access code included with each hard copy textbook. Unfortunately, the book has also increased in size from 520 to 1,156 pages! What used to be an ‘easy to learn’ book is now approaching the size of a reference book. Well illustrated and including photographs, it is the tables and ‘key learning points’ that are highlights. In its new edition, the book remains an essential read for all ENT trainees as well as for any aspiring head and neck surgeon of whatever discipline. It successfully updates the previous edition and the text should therefore be on the shelf of every medical library. Succeeding in Paediatric Surgery Examinations, Volumes 1 and 2
