Intercalation of acceptors in C60

1996
Abstract Acceptor molecules have been reacted with C 60 to produce new intercalant compounds. The reactants intercalated in this study are AsF 5 , InCl 3 , and SbCl 5 . The reactions with AsF 5 produced compounds containing AsF 6 − that were characterized with X-ray diffraction, far infrared absorption, and nuclear magnetic resonance. The room temperature resistivity of the compounds was on the order of 10 3 –10 4 Ω cm with an excitation energy for conduction of 0.22 eV. The reactions with InCl 3 produced compounds that were investigated with X-ray diffraction and far infrared absorption. They had room temperature resistivities of 10 2 Ω cm and excitation energies of 0.043 eV. Both the AsF 5 and InCl 3 reacted compounds had semiconducting behaviors with a transition that was verified by differential thermal analysis. The SbCl 5 compounds were characterized by far infrared absorption and showed a semiconducting behavior with an excitation energy of 0.65 eV.
